YOURS Project

The YOURS Project is an outreach program of the People's Music School, whose mission is to develop social and cultural awareness, foster responsibility, and provide necessary tools for success. This is done in the context of building a system of youth orchestras in inner-city Chicago, modeled after the El Sistema program developed by economist and musician José Antonio Abreu in Venezuela. Created and led by People's Music School strings teacher Deborah Wanderley Dos Santos, the YOURS Project targets children, many of whom are homeless or live in low-income circumstances. The education takes place in a structured and nurturing environment where children can grow to reach their full potential as healthy and responsible human beings. Named after The People's Music School founder, YOURS is an acronym that stands for Youth Orchestra Urban Rita Símo.
