{"id":460,"date":"2017-09-14T18:44:55","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T23:44:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peoplesmusicschool.org\/?p=460"},"modified":"2018-01-11T18:54:49","modified_gmt":"2018-01-12T00:54:49","slug":"getting-schooled-at-peoples-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peoplesmusicschool.org\/es\/getting-schooled-at-peoples-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting schooled at People\u2019s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Friend of The People\u2019s Music School,<\/p>\n<p>We are a school, a community, a place where everyone is learning together. \u00a0Including me. \u00a0I got schooled last spring &#8211; here\u2019s what happened:<\/p>\n<p>I had just finished talking to some of our winds and brass students in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PeoplesMusicSchool\/photos\/a.384489253556.165266.284469333556\/10154762711883557\/?type=3\">Greater South Side program<\/a>, in what I thought was a fairly inspirational chat. \u00a0At least an 8 out of 10 on the inspiration scale. \u00a0How far they had come, how hard they worked, to achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/ThePeoplesMusic\/yearinreview\">milestoneslike learning Pharrell Williams\u2019 \u201cHappy\u201d and performing for Yo-Ya Ma<\/a>. \u00a0We spoke of all the special guest artists that visited People\u2019s over the year. \u00a0I \u00a0then said, \u201c&#8230;and if you keep working hard, even more people will believe in us and we will have more opportunities with other important people\u2026\u201d<br \/>\nI saw the delight in the children\u2019s eyes, and a fresh sense of motivation. \u00a0I felt great.<\/p>\n<p>One of the students\u2019 mothers then came up to me. \u00a0\u201cMs. Jennifer, I just wanted to thank you for everything The People\u2019s Music School is doing. \u00a0This program means so much to my son, and the teachers are wonderful.\u201d \u00a0(I nod, and my glow shines on).<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cbut can I say something? \u00a0I know you didn\u2019t mean your comment in a bad way, but I tell my kids that they are important, that no one is more important than anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, I turned embarrassed and sorry for my speech. \u00a0And so wholly grateful for the feedback &#8211; she was absolutely right, and I told her so. \u00a0Every child is important. \u00a0Every child has a voice. \u00a0Every child should be empowered.<\/p>\n<p>In our community, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnainfo.com\/chicago\/20170331\/uptown\/kids-facing-racism-trauma-find-safe-haven-at-peoples-music-school\">many things seem to happen TO our students and families<\/a>. Violence on the streets, including gunfire in front of our buildings. Neglect and abuse at home. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/immigration\/ct-immigration-check-ins-met-20170404-story.html\">Policies that impact their futures as dreamers<\/a>. Yet The People\u2019s Music School is a place where we teach our children to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.
