We start another school year, with the normal bustle of new and returning students, families, and teachers.\u00a0 Figuring out room assignments, starting new repertoire, getting accustomed to different ensemble members.\u00a0 The squeaks and scratches from the violins mingle in the air with high-five claps between bandmates and a parent vacuuming the treble clef rug in the pit.\u00a0 Much is the same, and yet so much feels different, stronger.\u00a0 In just one year, we\u2019ve come so very far.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been my great honor to oversee the turnaround of The People\u2019s Music School, a national treasure based in my hometown Chicago.\u00a0 We deliver over 100,000 hours of music instruction to more than 500 students from 35 zip codes across the city.\u00a0 None of our students could otherwise afford music, and no other students work harder to deserve it.\u00a0 Knowing there are hundreds of others still on our waiting list, no one forgets how fortunate we all are to be in this community.<\/p>\n

Families camp out up to 6 days in advance of registration in 2009.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

In a year, we have overcome our significant financial deficit, remodeled how our students learn how to read and interpret music, and transformed our Board with renewed ambassadorship and new energy.\u00a0 There is only more to come, more challenges y<\/u> more wins, as we look to serve more of the immense need and demand for our services.\u00a0 But this was a great year.<\/p>\n

What made this a great year is also the foundation for even better years ahead.\u00a0 Because while we are proud of what<\/u><\/b> we accomplished, we are even prouder of how<\/u><\/b> we accomplished those things.\u00a0 We\u2019ve pegged it \u201cthe rise of the \u2018YES\u2019 people\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Our community is rich with \u2018YES\u2019 people.\u00a0 It’s a tenet of improvisational comedy<\/a>, and one that applies to music-making as well.\u00a0 We teach this principle to our students through ensemble work \u2013 how do you build upon each other\u2019s good works, adding your unique spin so that the whole is as cohesive as it is magnificent.<\/p>\n

Time and time again this past year, we\u2019ve relied on our \u2018YES\u2019 people.\u00a0 An electrician dad who said \u2018YES\u2019 to installing buzzers and cameras after we experienced security breaches. \u00a0Teachers who said \u2018YES\u2019 to performing on our behalf across the city. Staff and board members who said ‘YES’ to pulling off some amazing new events, like Music Hack Day.\u00a0 Long-time supporters who said \u2018YES\u2019 to providing transitional funding at a pivotal time.\u00a0 New funders who said \u2018YES\u2019 to big bets on our dream.\u00a0 Students who said \u2018YES\u2019 to advocating for our school, raising more than ever at our Performapaloozathon, our community fundraisers.\u00a0 Partners who said \u2018YES\u2019 to bringing incredible masterclasses, performances, residencies to our community.<\/p>\n

The rise of our \u2018YES\u2019 people makes our future seem limitless \u2013 which is good, since our dreams have no limit.\u00a0 We make the vast benefits of music accessible to those who need it the most, and our model translates into skills that serve our students for the rest of their lifetimes.\u00a0 To those who have been on this journey with us \u2013 thank you.\u00a0 Truly.\u00a0 To those who are just learning about us \u2013 say \u2018YES\u2019 and join our merry band of music warriors.\u00a0 We need your support to sustain and grow, and there are so many ways to have impact.\u00a0 Contact: info@peoplesmusicschool.org No prior musical experience required. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
