It\u2019s the first noun in <a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesmusicschool.org\/es\/mission-vision-values\/\">our mission<\/a>, and it\u2019s essential to our daily programming. How can we ensure the music classroom is always accessible to all?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This month, two experts in music education visited The People\u2019s Music School to provide professional development on differentiating the classroom for students with disabilities. Successful educators accommodate multiple learning styles, or <a href=\"https:\/\/vark-learn.com\/introduction-to-vark\/the-vark-modalities\/\">modalities<\/a>, into their teaching: visual, aural, and kinesthetic. In music, these modalities could look like learning a song through repeat-after-me exercises, creating simplified notation for a student, or including opportunities for movement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sara Jones offered\u00a0 creative ways teaching artists can cater to different modalities in the classroom: \u201cUse movement to accompany listening experiences and exercises. Have students track measures through their parts on a score. Use three-dimensional figures to represent abstract concepts like rhythm.\u201d By incorporating unconventional methods into the classroom, educators can make sure all types of learners are engaged.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-812cab3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"812cab3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Removing Barriers to Access<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9b7ffdd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9b7ffdd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt TPMS, we remove the financial barrier to access by providing free music education and free instruments,\u201d says The People\u2019s Music School President &amp; CEO, Miriam Owens.\u00a0 \u201cBut it\u2019s a mistake to think of that as the only barrier to access that matters.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By differentiating instruction, music educators help remove physical, sensory, social, and cultural barriers to access for students with and without disabilities. \u201cIt\u2019s important for everyone who teaches students in our context to understand the different barriers to access that may exist.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At The People\u2019s Music School, creating access is the foundation of everything we do.
