On Friday, February 27th, nearly 500 guests were welcomed to <\/span>The Geraghty<\/span><\/a> for <\/span>The People\u2019s Music School<\/span><\/a>\u2019s (TPMS) annual <\/span>Big Night Gala<\/span><\/a>. This year, Big Night celebrated \u201c50 Years of Daring to Play,\u201d marking the organization\u2019s 50th anniversary. The fundraising gala, chaired by <\/span>Board Vice Chair<\/b> Christie Crouch<\/b> and emceed by <\/span>NBC 5 Chicago Reporter<\/b> Jenn Schanz<\/b>, raised a record-breaking $825,000 – funding 100% tuition-free music education at The People\u2019s Music School.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This year\u2019s Big Night gala posthumously honored <\/span>Dr. Rita Sim\u00f3<\/span><\/a>, founder of The People\u2019s Music School. A Dominican immigrant and Juilliard-trained pianist, Rita founded \u201cThe Music School for the People\u201d in 1976 in a former beauty salon, staffed by volunteers and made possible by the donation of a baby grand piano. She had dreamt of having her own place to teach and share the joy of learning music with others, and her tenacity made that dream a reality that endures five decades later. She believed all children should have access to music education, regardless of their family\u2019s socioeconomic status. Rita\u2019s joyful spirit, fierce commitment to equity, and deep pride in her Dominican heritage made her a beloved leader in Chicago. A pillar in Chicago\u2019s arts community and a tireless voice for equitable community access, Rita spent many years on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

People\u2019s Music School <\/span>President and CEO Miriam Owens<\/b> took the stage to welcome guests: \u201cWe are here, celebrating fifty years of our founder Dr. Rita Sim\u00f3\u2019s audacious dream that has over its history given thousands of children across Chicago the gift of 100% tuition-free music education,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019d like to quote Rita herself: \u2018This is The People\u2019s Music School. You are a Person. This is your school – welcome.\u201d\u2019<\/span><\/p>

Also among the night\u2019s speakers were <\/span>Board member and People\u2019s Music School alumna, Nalini Kotamraju<\/b>, who accepted Rita\u2019s honor on her behalf. Rita was Nalini\u2019s piano teacher and became a mentor and close family friend. \u201cSome of you in the room may have known Rita and, therefore, you know what a force she was,\u201d said Nalini. \u201cThe fact that we are all sitting here at this event to celebrate half a century of high-quality tuition-free music education in Chicago \u2013 and that we\u2019re planning for the next century of it \u2013 is a testament to that force, and to her love for music and for people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

The event showcased over 80 student musicians, performing a variety of genres. The program opened with the all-school ensemble performing James Brown\u2019s \u201cI Got You (I Feel Good)\u201d. Guests got on their feet later in the evening and danced to the SLAM Jazz Ensemble\u2019s performance of \u201cSalsa Nights.\u201d The program concluded with Astor Piazzolla\u2019s \u201cLibertango\u201d performed by the SLAM Contemporary Orchestra.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
