Joe “Elmo” Farley (1953 – 2022)
Music played a vital part in the life of Joe Farley (1953-2022). As a boy in Elmwood Park, Joe entertained countless family members and loved ones by playing his accordion. While studying engineering at Northwestern University, Joe became known for his encyclopedic knowledge of music, which he loved to share with others. Throughout his blessed life he continued to expand his own musical horizons, listening to radio stations from around the globe via shortwave radios, which he built himself out of his basement studio in his home in Downers Grove.
Joe was happiest when combining his passion for music with his many other skills: from playing, building, and rebuilding guitars to fixing and refurbishing turntables, Joe always had his hands on the music in addition to his mind and his ears.
To honor the way Joe used music to enrich the lives of those around him, Joe’s friends and family are working with The People’s Music School to continue his legacy of opening minds and doors through music.
Contributions to the Joe “Elmo” Farley Fund will go towards musical instruments or the area of greatest need for The People’s Music School.
