For decades, The People’s Music School has been so much more than a place to learn music. First in Uptown, and now throughout the city, People’s has built a community like no other.
It’s the reason hundreds of students (850 this year!) stay with us for an average of seven years before graduating to other opportunities. It’s why our amazing network of TPMS families contribute over 4,000 hours of their time annually to keep the school running. We each play a role in creating this special community. A place where we can lean on each other, grow, and be ourselves — a place where we all belong.
This year, we’re celebrating this feeling of belonging that is so unique to TPMS. And now, you can experience our theme for 2019 — #YouBelongHere — through our favorite medium: music! Follow our #YouBelongHere playlist to hear what’s inspiring our students, faculty, and staff. We’re starting off with a favorite from one of our instructors (and newest staff member!), cellist David Sands:
“Same Love” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, feat. Mary Lambert
“It was very influential when I was learning to accept who I was. It was one of the first songs that I can remember featuring LGBT themes and characters in the music video. I remember listening to it in the car and feeling at peace.”
Look out for more beats about belonging as the year goes on, and share your own favorite tunes with us at development@peoplesmusicschool.org!
