Summer at TPMS

In July 2015, The People’s Music School and Rush Hour Concerts partnered up to deliver a week-long intensivemusic camp for 30 students from the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

High school mentors from the TPMS Albany Park Community Program and, Rush Hour concert faculty members teamed up to provide rigorous and fun instruction for students. Each day included, daily sectionals led by RHC faculty and TPMS mentors, followed by full-group rehearsals. With 30+ performers fit into the TPMS performance area, full rehearsals were lively.

After a break for lunch, students met for music theory class – using TPMS curriculum to increase their understanding of key theory concepts.

Finally, each day ended with electives.  Students each chose a “fun” class to round out their camp experience: performance jazz improv, mariachi, or vocal pop.  At the end of each day students participated in a master class which allowed them to interact with and receive instruction from professional musicians, or attend a local concert or performance.

In just five days, students made great progress fine tuning their skills, thanks to significant time spent working with mentors and teachers on a variety of techniques, and with additional individualized attention.  To celebrate the students’ achievements, the week ended with a concert for an audience of family members, friends and neighbors.

Sarah Morrow, TPMS Program Coordinator, shared: “It was fantastic to see 30 students new to TPMS doing good work on their instruments and, having the opportunity to attend master classes and concerts.  They were really wonderful young people to work with and I am excited to see this program develop in the fall to a larger capacity.

After such a successful camp, we are exploring ways to serve the Back of the Yards community this fall.  Stay tuned for updates!
